Colour
Turquoise is the hot colour for 2010. It flatters reds, blues and yellow-greens, makes black and white dramatic, and adds a splash of excitement to any of the earth tones from pale cream to deep expresso. Use it in cushions and accessories to add a punch of colour to any room in your home.
If its saturated hue is too much for you, consider its lighter versions, aqua and seafoam - serene with taupe for the bedroom and spectacular in the bathroom combined with black.

Metals
Gold is the new metal on the block in either polished or brushed versions. Use it to give classic white an elegant and sophisticated look.
Silver in all its forms - chrome, stainless, brushed nickel and satin chrome - is timeless. For an interesting twist, consider dual finishes where silver is combined with white, black or crystal.
Other metals such as bronze or black nickel used for faucets, lighting or cabinet hardware can make any space more exciting.

This is the year to give wallpaper a second glance. The array of choices is stunning, including some unusual options such as metallic or glass beaded paper.
Paper only one wall to create a focal point in a room that has no architectural features. Paper only the ceiling to make a room feel more intimate and cozy. Or, create visual interest and impress your guests by using a bold paper on the walls and ceiling of your powder room.

Porcelain is the tile of choice because it is strong and elegant but this year it looks like anything but porcelain tile. Look for it in faux finishes that resemble hardwood planks, cork, tweed, and basketweave, metal finishes like silver, bronze or platinum and bold colours such as orange, marine blue or chartreuse. Sizes are large - 24" squares or 12" x 24" rectangles.
For the backsplash, anything goes - squares, rectangles or mosaics in ceramic, porcelain, metal or glass - and there is a move away from the standard grid pattern to a more irregular design.
Mix-and-Match Style
The mismatched style is a big trend for 2010 as it reflects a transition to a more casual lifestyle.
Capitalize on this trend by putting chairs that are in different colours or styles at your dining table. Flank sofas with end tables that don't match. Use candlesticks that aren't identical.
Buy one-of-a-kind items and incorporate them into your existing room design for a look that's interesting and fresh.
Window Dressings
Sleek and simple is the look for window treatments this year.
The new panel-track systems join shades, shutters and blinds for a clean, modern look.
Draperies echo this theme and are usually simple panels mounted on a decorative rod. For a more luxurious look, keep the treatment simple but use rich silks, velvets or damasks and add lavish embellishments such as tassels, beads or crystal drops.
